Selective Oxidation of Benzyl Alcohols Using RuCl3•3H2O/DCHA in Air

The aerobic oxidation of benzylic alcohols to aldehydes was performed in a RuCl3•3H2O-dicyclohexylamine (DCHA) catalyst system under air atmosphere at room temperature. It is important that RuCl3•3H2O-DCHA system displays a preference for the primary versus secondary benzylalcohol in intermolecular competition experiments and a preference for the primary versus the secondary hydroxyl group of a benzylic diol in intramolecular competition experiments. The broad scope, mild reaction conditions, and experimental ease of this transformation have made it a valuable alternative to current available methods.
