A novel zinc phthalocyanine with catechol group (pCP-ZnPc-DA) was synthesized through amidation between a carboxyl in β-tetra(4-carboxylatophenoxy)phthalocyanine zinc (pCP-ZnPc) and an amino in dopamine (DA). The structure of these compounds was characterized by 1H NMR, FT-IR, ESI-MS and elemental analysis. The photophysical properties of pCP-ZnPc-DA were studied by UV/Vis absorption spectra and steady state fluorescence spectra. In addition, the effect of micelles on the aggregation of pCP-ZnPc-DA was investigated in aqueous solution. Moreover, the reaction between pCP-ZnPc-DA and dopamine was analyzed by UV/Vis absorption spectra, those results indicating that pCP-ZnPc-DA could copolymerize with dopamine. Therefore, materials could be endowed with a new photosensitive performance by the copolymerization.
