Abstract

Four new carboxyl-substituted phenylpropanoic acid derivatives, named plumeriapropionics F-I (1-4), were isolated from the leaves of Plumeria rubra L. Compounds 1-4 are rare carboxyl-substituted phenylpropanoic acid derivatives, and fewer than 10 analogues of this type have been reported so far. Their absolute configurations were determined by electronic circular dichroism (ECD) calculations. We evaluated the inhibitory effects of plumeriapropionics F-I on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced nitric oxide (NO) production in mouse macrophage RAW 264.7 cells in vitro. Compounds 1-4 showed potent inhibitory activities, with IC50 values ranging from 5.12 ± 0.08 to 38.29 ± 0.10 μM. For comparison, the positive control indomethacin exhibited an IC50 value of 25.11 ± 0.09 μM against NO production.
