Synthesis and Photoconductive Properties of Azo Pigment from Anthraquinone

Nine azo pigments have been synthesized by coupling 1- aminoanthraquinone with various couplers. The results of elemental analysis and IR spectrum indicate that the synthesis and purification are successful. It is important to note that when the coupler was changed from 2-hydroxy-3-naphthanilide to 2-hydroxy-11 H- benzocarbazole-3-carboxanilide (Azo9), a red shift of 130 nm from 528 nm to 662 nm in DFM solution was observed. The photoconductive properties were performed on a bilayer xerographic device. The results show that the photosensitivity of the pigment has a sensitivity relationship with both electronic and conjugate effects. The electron- withdrawing groups in the anilide ring of the coupler moiety enhance the photosensitivity. Remarkable increase of photosensitivity was observed with Azo9, suggesting that conjugation effects drastically influence the photoconductive properties.
