Photo polymerization of acrylamide (AAM) onto CaCO3 particle surfaces and its structure were studied by polymerization effectiveness, electron spectra for chemical analysis (ESCA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and particle size measurements. The results show that AAM monomer can be effectively polymerized onto CaCO3 particle surface to form a PAAM layer by UV irradiation. This layer tightly wraps the CaCO3 particle and can not be washed out by acetone. An obvious N 1s peak is observed on the ESCA spectra of the treated CaCO3 particle, however no N 1s peak appears on the spectra of original CaCO3 particle. After being treated by surface polymerization, CaCO3 particle size will increase.
