Following the analysis of the composition of the floral absolute oil from Aglaia odorata Lour., chemical composition of the previously studied steam-volatile floral essential oil has been further investigated by the aid of GC-MS-DS technique in combination with IR and H-1 NMR analyses. It was found that, while the hydrocarbon portion was similar and simpler in composition in comparison to the absolute oil, the oxygenated portion appeared much more complex. Thus, α-cubebene, copaene, caryophyllene, bicycloelemen, humulene, β-santalene, γ-murrolene, dihydrobisabolene, α-murrolene, β-bisabolene, calamenene and calacorene have been identified in the hydrocarbon portion, and in addition to the oxygenated sesquiterpense as well as methyl jasmonate reported in the study of the absolute oil, several aliphatic and aromatic components have been identified. These include methyl heptenone, 2-ethylhexanol, benzyl alcohol and benzyl acetate, which, together with humulene epoxide II constitutes the main faction of the oxygenated portion. Furthermore, one of the main sesquiterpenes γ-elemene (17.6%) in the absolute oil disappeared completely in the steam-volatile essential oil while the content of humulene rose correspondingly from 31.0% in the absolute oil to 49.8% in the essential oil. A probable mechanism involving a Cope rearrangement followed by a proton-catalyzed hydration-dehydration rearrangement during the process of steam distillation has been proposed to account for this interesting phenomenon.
