Asymmetric Pinacol Coupling of Aromatic Aldehydes Mediated by Chiral Squaric Acid Amidoalcohol-Titanium Complexes

Two enantiopure squaric acid amidoalcohols were synthesized and used for the asymmetric pinacol coupling of aromatic aldehydes with TiC14(THF)2-Zn in excellent yields, high dl-diastereoselectivity and good enantioselectivity. The effect of the structure of aromatic aldehyde and coreductant on the diastereoselectivity and enantioselectivity was also studied.
