In this paper, a gravimetric method which uses benzoylacetone as precipitating agent for the determination of beryllium is proposed. Beryllium is precipitated as beryllium benzoylacetonate, Be(C10H9O2)2, in a slight basic solution containing ammonium carbonate. It is best precipitated at pH 8.8-10.5. Phosphate and fluoride ions, if present in small amount, cause no interference. Interference by Cu2+, Ni2+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Mn2+ and moderate quantities of Fe3+, Al3+ can be prevented by the addition of disodium salt of EDTA solution. From one half to 15 mg of beryllium may be determined with success. The method may be summarized as follows: To 50-100 ml solution containing beryllium ion, add EDTA solution to mask the interfering cations, and ammonium carbonate (2-3 gm) to complex beryllium ions. After the soution becomes clear, ammonia is added until phenolphthalein shows a distinct pink colour. A 3% acetone solution of benzoylacetone is gradually added until about 3 ml in excess. Heat the solution to 90-100℃ and keep at this temperature for about 10 minutes. After cooling, the precipitate is filtered with a sintered glass crucible, washed with water and dried at 110-120℃ to constant weight.
