The title compound (I) was prepared in 12% yield in 4 steps starting from (E,E)-EtCH:CHCH:CHCO2H. Reaction of I with singlet O, produced by thermal decomposition of 1-methyl-4-phospha-3,5,8-trioxabicyclo[2.2.2]octane, gave 11% dioxane derivative II and 22% (E,E,Z)-MeCH:CHCH(OOH)CH:CHCH:CH(CH2)6H.
