Several fluorimetric systems were investigated for possible application in the determination of trace amts. of F- based on the fluorescence quenching principle. The fluorescence of Zr-8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulfonic acid chelate (I) was 68% quenched in the presence of 1 mg F-. The optimum reaction conditions, composition, and apparent stability constant of I were determine The sensitivity of the method is 0.002 mg F-/mL. The F- content of water samples was determine with satisfactory accuracy and precision.
