Application of orthogonal designs in the synthesis of sodium 6-methacryloxyhexanesulfonate

The polymer of sodium 6-methacryloxyhexanesulfonate (SSHMA) showed improved anticoagulant activity. We applied orthogonal designs to study the optimal reaction conditions in the synthesis of SSHMA, which includes chlorination, sulfonation and esterification steps. Both the yields and purities of the products are improved. In the sulfonation of \o\-chlorohexanol, the use of large excess of sodium sulfite should be avoided. In the esterification of sodium \o\-hydroxyhexanesulfonate with excess methacrylic acid the presence of tetrbutyl ammonium hydrosulfate as phase transfer catalyst is an important factor.
