Synthesis crystal structure and luminescence of coordination compound of europium p-methylbenzoate with 2,2'-dipyridine

Eu2(p-MBA)6(bpy)2 (I; p-MBA = p-methylbenzoate) was synthesized and characterized by elemental anal. and IR spectrum. The crystal structure of I was determine by the x-ray diffraction anal. It crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c with a 1.4086(6), b 1.9115(11), c 2.3077(16) nm: b 96.60(4)?and Z = 4. The metal atoms are octacoordinated with the bidentate ligands. Since I fluoresces very intensely under UV or visible light, using Eu(III) ion as luminescent probe, the high-resoln. laser excited excitation and luminescence spectra and time resolved spectra were recorded at 77K. The emission spectra indicate that two Eu(III) ion sites are present in the compound
