  1. The polypyridyl ligand with multi coordination sites ODCIP (ODCIP=3,4-dichloroimi- dazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline) and its ruthenium(II) complex [Ru(bpy)2ODCIP]2+ were synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, IR, NMR and FAB-MS. The DNA-binding properties of complex [Ru(bpy)2ODCIP]2+ were studied by absorption spectra, fluorescent spectra and viscosity methods. The coordination of [Ru(bpy)2ODCIP]2+ with Co2+ was also investigated. The results indicated that [Ru(bpy)2ODCIP]2+ bound to DNA by part intercalation. The binuclear complex [Ru(bpy)2(ODCIP)Co]4+ could be formed by [Ru(bpy)2ODCIP]2+ and Co2+, and it bound to DNA by intercalation. Furthermore, the luminescent properties of [Ru(bpy)2ODCIP]2+ and [Ru(bpy)2(ODCIP)Co]4+ were investigated by fluorescent spectra.
