Complexation Behavior of Protonated 4,4’-Bipyridinium Salts with Dibenzo-24-crown-8

The complexation behavior of two protonated 4,4’-bipyridinium salts with dibenzo-24-crown-8 in solution and gas state was studied by analysis of 1H NMR, ESI-MS, and UV-Vis spectra. The obtained results show that supramolecular complex compounds with a 1∶1 stoichoimetry are formed, which are sandwiched. The diprotonated salt has a stronger association ability with dibenzo-24-crown-8 than the monoprotonated one, and the association constant is 200 and 116 L•mol-1, respectively.
