Ultrasonic Synthesis of pH-Sensitive PMAA Hydrogel

Using methacrylic acid as starting materials, N,N'-methylene bisacrylamide as a crosslinker and potassium persulfate as initiator, pH sensitive poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) hydrogel was synthesized by free radical polymerization under ultrasonic radiation. The molecular structure and chemical properties of hydrogel were characterized by IR and SEM. On this basis, impact of ultrasonication on swelling-deswelling of hydrogel was emphatically studied. Experimental results indicated that intelligent hydrogels prepared by ultrasonic synthesis have higher equilibrium swelling ratio and faster response comparing to traditional methods.
