The anticancer drug, steroidal saponin OSW-1 was isolated from the bulbs of Ornithogalum saundersiae. Its analogue 23-Oxa-OSW-1 was found to strongly suppress the growth of the malignant tumor cells with an IC50 0.052~0.4 μmol•L-1, as potent as OSW-1. However its target in vivo is still unknown. In this paper, by using 1D and 2D 1H NMR techniques, it was found that 23-Oxa-OSW-1 could interact with DNA. Further analysis of the NMR data indicated that its xylose part might be involved in its interaction with DNA. In addition, to our knowledge, the detailed assignment of 23-Oxa-OSW-1 1H chemical shifts done here has never been reported so far.
