The interaction of Co(II) complex [Co2(EGTB)Cl2]•(BF4)2•5H2O with DNA has been investigated by electronic absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, viscosity and gel electrophoresis measurements. The apparent binding constants of the complex with DNA was obtained at pH=7.2. The results indicated that the Co(II) complex could cleave pBR322DNA effectively at physiological pH and temperature, and also increase the viscosity of DNA. The emission intensity was quenched as the complex was added to the EB-DNA system. The results suggest that the interaction of Co(II) complex with DNA belong to both partial intercalation and static electricity attraction mode.
