UPS , thermal desorption mass spectroscopy (TDS), and temperature- reaction spectroscopy (TPRS) were used to study the adsorption and reaction of MeOH and O on Ag90Pd10 alloy. There are 2 atomic adsorption states of O on the surface of alloy, one (a peak in O2-TDS) corresponding to O adsorbed on the site related to the surface Ag atom and the other corresponding to the interaction of O with Pd. The peak temperature of the a peak is ~ 40 K lower on the alloy than that on pure Ag. On the alloy, MeOH partly decomposed to CO and H2 at room temperature The TPRS results show that due to the presence of Pd atoms on the surface of the alloy, the temperature of MeOH reacting with O adsorbed on Ag is 30 K lower than that on pure Ag, and the reaction gives only 2 groups of products. These results can be explained by electronic effects caused by Ag alloying with Pd.
