Chemical Modification of Carbon Nanotubes and Tribological Properties as Lubricant Additive

The multi-walled carbon nanotubes were purified by sulfuric acid and nitric acid.The surface of carbon nanotubes was modified with stearic acid.The tribological behavior of stearic acid coated carbon nanotubes as lubricant additive was investigated.The results showed that the surface of carbon nanotubes was coated with a modified layer of stearic acid.It was proved that a covalent bond was formed by chemical reaction between hydroxylic groups on the surface of carbon nanotubes and carboxylic groups of stearic acid.Stearic acid coated carbon nanotubes as additive effectively improved the friction-reduction and antiwear ability of lubricant.
