Tetracation cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) is a cyclophane-like molecular receptor, which contains π-electron-deficient bipyridinium units for face-to-face complexation with π-electron-rich hydroquinone units. Its synthetic strategies, structural characters, properties and applicationsto the self-assembly of rotaxanes and catenanes are reviewed.
