Alkylation in solid-liquid two phase systems III:alkylation of ethyl acetoacetate

Et acetoacetate (I) was alkylated with RX (R = Me, Et, Pr, Me2CH, Bu, sec-Bu, Me3C, n-amyl, allyl, PhCH2; X = iodo, Br, Cl) and K2CO3 in the absence of solvent and catalyst. Thus, heating I with EtBr and K2CO3 at 110?for 4.5 h gave 73.4% MeCOCHEtCO2Et and Me(OEt):CHCO2Et.
