A Novel Reaction of 10-Methylacridinium with Reactive Metals under Grinding

Under grinding, 10-methylacridinium iodide was reacted with alkaline metal Li, Na, or K to give 9,10-dihydro-10-methylacridine (AcrH2), and 9,10-dihydro-10-methyl-9-acridone (Acr＝O) in excellent yields, which can be understood in terms of an initial electron transfer from metal to 10-methylacridinium iodide.
