A Mild and Highly Efficient ZnCl2-Catalyzed Direct Alkylation of Active Methylene Compounds with Benzylic and Allylic Alcohols

A mild and highly efficient ZnCl2-catalyzed direct alkylation of active methylene compounds with benzylic and allylic alcohols has been reported. The alkylation was carried out in the presence of sub-stoichiometric amounts of anhydrous ZnCl2 (5~10 mol%) under reflux in dichloromethane with high yields. It is an easy handling and atomic-economic reaction and water is the only side product. The possible mechanism for this direct alkylation has preliminary studied as well.
