A series of spiro[1,3-dioxo-indan-pyrane] derivatives were synthesized from ninhydrin, malononitrile and β-diketone/2-naphthol/8-hydroxyquinoline in the presence of basic ionic liquid [Bmim][OH]. The structures of products were identified by ¹H NMR, IR and MS techniques. The advantage of the procedure were mild reaction conditions, short reaction time and environmental friendliness. Moreover, the catalyst [Bmim][OH] could be recovered conveniently and reused for at least four times without evident loss of activity.
