Carbazole and its derivatives are one kind of important nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds with a large conjugated system and a rigid structure, and it is easy to introduce different groups into the carbazole backbone. Carbazole compounds have a good fluorescent property, and its NH unit itself can work as one recognition site for anions. In this paper, the recent progress of carbazole-based anion receptors is summarized according to the different geometrical structures of receptor compounds, such as linear, cleft-shaped, cyclic, branched, tripodal, oligomer, polymer etc. The developing prospects of this kind of anion receptors are also discussed.
