Preparation and Characterization of Arginine Intercalated Layered Manganese Oxide Nanocomposite

Na-type layered manganese oxide [BirMO(Na)] was hydrothermally prepared by a oxidation method, then it was translated into H-type layered manganese oxide [BirMO(H)] in a 0.1 mol/L HCl solution. When BirMO(H) was treated in a (CH3)4NOH solution for 7 d, it was delaminated into MnO2 nanosheet colloid suspension. The MnO2 nanosheet colloid suspension was poured into an arginine solution of pH=4.0~11.0 followed by stirring for 2 d, then arginine intercalated layered manganese oxide nanocomposite with a basal spacing of 1.49 nm (ARILMO) was prepared by a delamination/reassembling process. The obtained ARILMO sample was characterized by XRD, DSC-TGA, SEM, IR and elemental analysis. Experimental results indicated that the intercalated type and the amount of arginine molecules were connected with the pH values of the arginine solutions, and the intercalated amount of arginine molecules was 1.80 mmol/g.
