Biomimetic Synthesis of Nacre-like Regenerated Silk Fibroin/Aragonite Composite

The effects of the concentration of polyacrylic acid (MW=2000, PAA-2k) and mole ratio of Ca2+/ Mg2+ on the crystallization of CaCO3 on the surface of regenerated silk fibroin (RSF) membrane were investigated in detail. The continuous film of calcite was formed on the surface of RSF membrane under the regulation of PAA-2k, while the aragonite film could be obtained under the co-regulation of PAA-2k and a certain amount of Mg2+. Then the nacre-like RSF/aragonite composite was prepared accordingly. The formation of the continuous CaCO3 film on the surface of RSF membrane was speculatively attributed to the coordination between the nucleation-induction of the absorbed PAA on the RSF surface and the inhibiting effect of PAA in solution for the crystallization of CaCO3.
