The titled compounds were conveniently obtained in two steps from cyclopentadiene, namely alkylation of cyclopentadiene with alkyl halides and KOH in the precence of polyothylene glycol (PEG) as phase transfer catalyst to give alkylcyclo-pentadienes which were brominated and then hydrolyzed to give 2-alkylcyclopent-2 -enones with an overall yield of 20 to 30%.
