Photocatalytic technology, renowned for its environmental friendliness, mild reaction conditions, low operational cost, and facile synthetic accessibility, has emerged as one of the most compelling green technologies in modern society. It exhibits promising prospects for practical applications across a broad spectrum of application fields, including atmospheric pollutant abatement, wastewater treatment, aquatic environmental remediation, clean hydrogen evolution, renewable energy conversion, organic synthesis, and green chemical transformation. By harnessing solar energy as the primary driving force, photocatalysis enables the efficient catalytic transformations, successfully achieving storage and conversion of solar energy into chemicals. This strategy is well aligned with the goals of carbon neutrality and sustainable social development. Porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) represent an innovative category of organic porous materials with broad application prospects. They possess distinctive advantages including precisely tunable topological structures at the molecular level, robust stable covalent linkages, ultra-high specific surface area and favorable porosity, as well as excellent chemical and thermal stability under harsh environments. Meanwhile, PAFs incorporated with diverse photoactive units also exhibit superior light-harvesting capacity across a broad light spectrum, abundant exposed active sites and extended conjugated skeleton structures, thus serving as a promising platform for fabricating high-performance and long-term high-stability photocatalysts. Thus, rationally designing and constructing functional PAFs with adjustable bandgaps, regulated energy levels and efficient photogenerated charge carrier separation and migration, as well as extensively exploring their diverse photocatalytic applications, are of great theoretical and practical significance for linking the internal structure and photocatalytic performance of advanced porous organic semiconductor photocatalysts. The latest research progress and representative achievements of PAFs in the field of photocatalysis are systematically summarized, focusing on their molecular and structural design strategies, photocatalytic reaction mechanisms, diverse application scenarios, as well as existing challenges and future development directions. It aims to provide solid theoretical guidance and valuable practical references for the subsequent development and fabrication of high-performance PAF-based semiconductor photocatalysts.
