Covalently Chemical Functionalization of Multi-walled Carbon Nanotubes with Amino Porphyrins

5-(4-Aminophenyl)-10,15,20-triphenylporphyrin and its copper(II) complex were synthesized. Then through the covalently chemical reaction between the oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) and the amino porphyrins, the composites were gotten. The chemical properties of the resultant products were characterized by FT-IR, finding the amidation reactions in the composites. Strong intramolecular interaction between the amino porphyrins and MWNT was found from UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. The morphology of the functionalized MWNT was also observed using transmission electron microscopy, revealing that the amino porphyrins were attached to the sidewalls of MWNT.
