In this paper, the effect of solvent in the Huang Minlon reduction has been discussed. It is found that di-or triethylene glycol is a host solvent which acts as a phase transfer catalyst, can enhance the basicity of KOH or NaOH, and is favourable for the decomposition of hydrazone into hydrocarbon. Some polyoxyethylene surfactants were also used as catalysts in the Wolff-Kishner reduction and good yields were obtained.
