Sulfonium salts are a class of positively charged organosulfur compounds in which three substituents are bonded to a sulfur atom. Owing to the positively charged sulfur center, sulfonium salts exhibit unique electronic properties and high electrophilic reactivity, enabling diverse chemical transformations. In recent years, with the rapid development of synthetic methodologies, sulfonium salts have emerged as versatile intermediates in organic synthesis and have been widely applied in cross-coupling reactions, radical transformations, functional group modifications, and the construction of complex molecules. This review summarizes recent advances in the synthesis and strategic applications of sulfonium salts in organic synthesis, highlighting their strategic applications in diverse organic reactions. Representative reaction mechanisms are also discussed to provide insights for the further development of sulfonium-salt-mediated transformations.
