Syntheses and Complexation Properties of Calix[4]arene Derivatives Containing Amides and Schiff-base Units

Calix[4]arene hydrazide derivative 2 was obtained by the reaction of 1,3-bis(ethoxycarbonyl- methoxy)calix[4]arene (1) with hydrazine hydrate. Treatment of compound 2 with corresponding aldehydes, three novel calix[4]arene derivatives 3 and a new calix[4]crown 4 containing amides and schiff-base units were synthesized in high yields. The extraction experiments showed that new calix[4]arene derivatives exhibited higher complexation abilities than calix[4]arene derivatives containing amides or schiff-bases. Calix[4]crown 4 showed high Ag complexation selectivity.
