  An efficient copper-catalyzed asymmetric hydroboration of 1-benzoyl-2,3-dihydropyridin-4(1H)-ones is reported by Wu, Sun, and Xu on page 2816. This protocol features a broad substrate scope, tolerating various N-acyl substituents (aryl, naphthoyl, heteroaryl, pivaloyl) and substituted benzoyl moieties, affording cyclic α-aminoboronate esters with up to 99% yield and ee values of 84%～96%. A plausible mechanism invo- lving a borylcopper intermediate and σ-bond metathesis is proposed.

  To realize earth-abundant nickel-catalyzed C(sp2)—N coupling of aryl halides with sulfonamide compounds under irradiation from 390～395 nm LEDs irradiation, a mild and efficient method that requires no external photosensitizer was developed by Wang, Liu, Song, Shi, and Xue on page 2835. The nickel-catalyzed protocol with soluble amine bases boasts easily accessible star- ting materials, mild reaction conditions, simple opera- tion, broad substrate scope, and excellent functional- group tolerance.

  The recent advances over the past five years in cobalt- cata-lyzed C—S bond formation for the synthesis of various or-ganosulfur compounds are systematically summarized by Xiao and Zhong on page 2644. The advantages of cobalt as an earth-abundant, low-cost metal with variable oxidation states and low biotoxicity are highlighted, which enable efficient sulfurization under mild conditions with excellent chemoselectivity and functional group tolerance.

  The α-branched methylation of ketones with methanol catalyzed by a bis-N-heterocyclic carbene manganese(I) complex under phosphine-free conditions was reported by Lan, Yu, Chen, Yang, Wang and Ke on page 2751. A broad range of aromatic propiophenone derivatives are well-tolerated and selective double methylation is also feasible for acetophenone derivatives with good product yields.
