Adsorption Mechanism of Methoxy Modified Macroporous Crosslinked Resin for Phenol

Methoxy modified macroporous crosslinked resin was prepared from macroporous crosslinked chloromethylated polystyrene. Its chemical structure was characterized by chemical analysis (measurement of chlorine content), infrared spectrum and elemental analysis, and it was shown that 4.10 mmol/g of methoxy groups were uploaded onto the skeleton of polystyrene. The adsorption isotherms of the obtained resin for phenol were measured in hexane and it was seen that the adsorption isotherms could be correlated to straight lines and plots of the straight line decreased with increasing of the temperature. According to the calculated adsorption enthalpy, comparison of the adsorption isotherms in different conditions, and theoretical calculation, hydrogen bonding was elucidated to be the principal driving force for the adsorption, and the oxygen atom of ether bond of the prepared resin forms strong hydrogen bonding with the hydrogen atom of phenolic hydroxyl group of phenol.
