Study of Photomodulation of PDLC Membrane Based on Azo-LC

Polymer dispersed liquid crystals (PDLC) membrane was prepared by solvent method based on PS and photosensitive nematic LCs (5CB+BMAB). Optical switch of the PDLC membrane was realized through photoinduced phase transition of azo-LC BMAB. Experimental results indicated that liquid crystals molecule assembled as double-pole configuration inside PDLC membrane. Temperature range for optical control was between 19 and 36 ℃. Transmittance of the membrane increased from 6% to 93% after irradiated by UV light around 360 nm. With the same work distance, photomodulation time was related with diameter of micropores in PDLC membrane. At the same concentration of liquid crystal, photomodulation time would increase with diameter of micropore reduced.
