The interactions of Morin (2',3,4',5,7-pentahydroxyflavone) and its Zn(Ⅱ), Cu(Ⅱ), or Co(Ⅱ)-complex with calf thymus DNA have been studied by using spectral, viscometric and electrochemical methods. And there is a comparison between the interactions of Morin and its Co(Ⅱ), Cu(Ⅱ), or Zn(Ⅱ)-complexes with DNA. The complexes of Zn(Ⅱ) and Cu(Ⅱ) have the same spectral characteristics, which is different from that of Morin and Co(Ⅱ)-complex in the presence of DNA. The electrochemical behavior of Co(Ⅱ)-complex is the same as that of Cu(Ⅱ)-complex, but different from that of Zu(Ⅱ)-complex with the DNA addition. The relative viscosity of DNA increased with the addition of Zu(Ⅱ)-, Cu(Ⅱ)- or Co(Ⅱ)-complex. The results suggest that the Co(Ⅱ)-complex binds to DNA in a part-intercalating mode. This may be one of the reasons that the antitumour activity of Co(Ⅱ)-complex is weaker than that of Cu(Ⅱ) and Zn(Ⅱ)-complexes, which bind to DNA in intercalating mode.
