Synthesis of 2,5-dimethyl-4-hydroxy-3(2H) furanone

2,5-Dimethyl-4-hydroxy-3(2H) furanone has been synthesized by the electrolytic oxidative coupling of acetylacetone followed by Paal-Knorr cyclization, Baeyer-Villiger oxidation and hydrolysis processes. Intermediate 4 and by-product 5 are new compounds.
