Total Synthesis of (±)-Mesembrine

A novel strategy for the construction of quaternary carbon centers via tandem α-arylation/allylation of 3-ethoxy-2-cyclohexenone was designed and successfully employed in the total syntheses of the aizoaceae alkaloids, namely, mesembrine. Total synthesis of (±)-mesembrine was completed with only six steps in 17.8% overall yield from commercial materials.
