Synthesis of 9-Arylpolyhydroacridine in Water Catalyzed by Triethylbenzylammonium Chloride (TEBA)

A series of 3,3,6,6-tetramethyl-1,8-dioxo-9-aryl-1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10-decahydro-acridines have been synthesized by the condensation of aromatic aldehydes, 5,5-dimethyl-1,3-cyclohexanedione and ammonium acetate in the presenceof triethylbenzylammonium chloride (TEBA) as catalyst in water. Compared with other solvents, water is cheap, not inflammable and not toxic, and the yields of the reaction are high. The structure of 3e was confirmed by X-ray analyses.
