2-(1-Benzyl-3-methyl-2-indolylmethylene)-3-isopropylidenesuccinic anhydride was synthesized by Stobbe condensation of 1-benzyl-3-methylindole-2-carbaldehyde with diethyl isopropylidenesuccinate in the presence of sodium hydride and toluene, followed by cyclization of diacid by treatment with acetyl chloride. The photochromic properties of the fulgide in various solvents were studied.
