A series of fluorene or phenanthrene derivatives were synthesized from arylaldehyde, malononitrile and 2-(1,2-dihydroinden-3-ylidene)malononitrile or 2-(2,3-dihydronaphthalen-4(1H)-ylidene)-malono-
nitrile catalyzed by KF/Al2O3 at 80 ℃ in ethyl alcohol. This method has the advantages of mild reaction conditions, high yields (72%~88%) and easy operation. The structures of the products were characterized by IR, 1H NMR spectra and elemental analyses.
