γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) is an nonprotein amino acid that functions as a neurotransmitter in the mammalian central nervous system. Some of these GABA analogues have already been used in clinic to treat disorders associated with GABA deficiency. In the past twenty years, chemists have been focusing on the asymmetric synthesis of lipophilic analogues of GABA and developing new synthetic routes. This review tries to cover the synthesis of these analogues from different starting materials.
