Classification of macrocyclic compounds containing tetrathiafulvalene is introduced briefly. The synthetic methods of macrocyclic compounds containing tetrathiafulvalene are outlined, which mainly include the coupling reaction of a macrocyclic compound containing a 1,3-dithiole-2-thione unit mediated by trialkyl phosphite and reactions between a well-designed tetrathiafulvalene functionalized by cyanoethylthio groups or other substituents and an oligo (ethylene glycol) dihalide. The latest advances in research on electrochemical properties and applications to molecular recognition of macrocyclic compounds containing tetrathiafulvalene are reviewed. The development trends in research on such macrocyclic compounds containing tetrathiafulvalene are proposed.
