Improved Preparation of 3-Aryloxypropanals

3-Aryloxypropanals are important intermediates for the preparations of medicines, plasticizers and surfactants. An improved preparation of 3-aryloxypropanal is reported starting from substituted phenols, followed by coupling with 3-bromo-1,1-dimethoxypropane and deprotection in acidic condition in good (up to 82%) overall yield. The whole processes are mild, simple and reliable for larger scale preparations.
