Formation and non-formation of ethylene ketals by p-hydroxy-γ -halobutyrophenone and related compounds

p-Hydroxy-g-halobutyrophenones, p-benzyloxy-g-hydroxybutyrophenone, b-(p-hydroxybenzoyl)propionic acid, and p-hydroxyacetophenone under the standard condition of ethylene ketal formation did not undergo ketal formation. g-Halobutyrophenones with other para-substituents formed ethylene ketals with varied stabilities. The structural implications regarding the nonformation of ethylene ketals were discussed.
