Investigation on the Fractal Growth and Formation Mechanism of RDX

1,3,5-Trinitro-1,3,5-triazacyclohexane (RDX) with the fractal structure is prepared under the non-equilibrium state by crystallizing from mixed solution. Solution viscosity and solvate volatility are changed by adding different alcohols in order to control the degree of non-equilibrium and RDX fractal morphology. The results show that when glycol is added to the acetone solutions of RDX, RDX grows into fractal structure with the increasing of the solution concentration|when ethanol is added into the solution, with the increasing of the solution concentration, the RDX crystal morphology converts from random aggregation to fractal, after to dendrite, subsequently to faceted structure, and finally to single grain. The formation mechanism for the fractal structure of RDX has been discussed based on the fractal growth conditions and alcohols property.
