Reported herein is an efficient and green one-pot, three-component cyclization tactic for imidazole synthesis. With cheap rongalite as C1 synthon to react with 2H-azirines and amines, a series of 1,4,5-trisubstituted imidazoles have been synthesized in green EtOH medium. The work represents the first example on imidazole synthesis with rongalite as C1 synthon. Comparing with traditional method using aldehyde C1 synthon, rongalite displays evidently expanded tolerance to different types of substrates in the current work, enabling the synthesis of imidazole with rather broad scope.
