N-alkylation of imidazoles using polyethylene glycols or their monoethers as phase transfer catalysts

Abstract

The N-alkylation of imidazoles and their derivatives by alkyl halides with the aid of polyethylene glycols (PEG) or their monoethers is distinguished for their availability and safeness in comparison wiht other phase transfer catalysts, such as crown ethers and tetraalkylammonium salts. The influence of the structures of alkyl halides, PEG and their monoethers on the reaction is also discussed.
