Advances in Synthesis and Research of Tetrathiafulvalenes Containing Halogen Substituent

The two main methods for the synthesis of tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) derivatives containing halogen substituent, namely the direct halogenation of TTF and its derivatives and the trialkyl phosphite-mediated coupling of halogenated 1,3-dithiole-2-thione (or 2-one) compounds are outlined briefly. Electrochemical, crystalline, and film-forming properties as well as applications to construction of donor-acceptor dyads, oli-gomeric TTF systems, TTF-containing cyclophanes, TTF-containing polymers, and other functionalized TTF systems are reviewed. The development trends in research on TTF derivatives containing halogen substituent are proposed.
